NJBIA Campaign for Manufacturing Renewal

We are pleased to send you an update on our Campaign for Manufacturing Renewal in New Jersey. We especially wanted to let you know about several training programs that are currently available to help you and your employees - at no charge to your company. Please click on the links below to find more information or get started.

Lean Manufacturing Workshops: At No Charge to Your Company
________________________________________________________________________

Find out how to make your manufacturing operations more efficient and profitable. The NJ Manufacturing Extension Program (NJMEP) has invited NJBIA members to participate free of charge in these workshops, which normally cost $250-$325.

March 20, Make Your Office Operations Lean and Efficient
April 10, Principles of Lean Food Production
May 22, Make Your Office Operations Lean and Efficient
June 19, Principles of Lean Manufacturing

Space is limited for each of these full-day workshops (8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.), which will be held at the NJMEP’s Morris Plains office, 520 Speedwell Ave., Suite 116. Visit Resources for NJ Manufacturers for more information or call 973-998-9801.

Basic Skills Training for Your Employees: Call 609-393-9009
________________________________________________________________________

There's still time to get training for your employees at no charge to your company in:
        • English as a second language,
        • Essential communications skills (written and verbal).

You can also be the first in line for new classes in:
        • Basic computer skills
        • Basic mathematics and measurement

In partnership with NJBIA, The NJ Community College Consortium will coordinate and provide the training, thanks to a $1.88 million grant from the NJ Department of Labor. To get started, contact Bob Rosa, 609-393-9009, or visit www.njbia.org/resources/training.

Protect Your Manufacturing Co. from Rising Electricity Costs
________________________________________________________________________

Manufacturers whose monthly electricity bills are at least $5,000 can lock in pricing and protect themselves against the volatility of an unpredictable energy market.

NJBIA and Constellation NewEnergy have put together the right contract to help your business manage its energy costs. With a set rate for the term of the contract, the program offers a fixed price that provides long-term price stability and budget certainty, no change in distribution service from your utility, and access to retail choice credits, if applicable.

Go here for more information or contact Stephanie Rios at 212-885-6439.

Become a Manufacturing Council Member: Be the First to Know
________________________________________________________________________

The best way to take advantage of manufacturing resources, such as the training programs described above, is to attend the quarterly meetings of NJBIA's Manufacturing Council. Visit our Policy Committee and Issue Network signup page and put a check mark next to "Manufacturing" and “Committee.” You can also send an e-mail to NJBIA Senior Vice President Melanie Willoughby. Next meetings:

May 14 – How to avoid environmental fines & penalties
September 17 – Best practices in workers' compensation and safety
December 3 – Tour a top NJ manufacturing facility; discuss quality control

Gov. Signs Three News Laws Favorable to NJ Manufacturers
________________________________________________________________________

Three new State laws favorable to manufacturers were signed by Governor Corzine at the close of the 2006-2007 Legislature. Send an e-mail to NJBIA First Vice President Arthur Maurice for more information.

UEZ Sales Tax Exemption Extended: A-3938 extends the small-business exemption under the UEZ sales tax rebate program to business with annual gross receipts of less than $3 million, up from the former $1 million threshold.

Business-Retention Tax Credit Expanded: A-1696 makes small businesses eligible for Business Relocation and Retention Grant tax credits. The legislation expands the program to businesses retaining 50 or more jobs, up from the current minimum of 250 jobs.

Urban Transit Hub Tax Credit: S-3043 creates a new tax credit program for capital investments near urban train stations. While the program is limited to only nine cities, Governor Corzine said in statement that he wants to expand the program to other areas of the state.

That wraps up our quarterly Manufacturing Campaign report. If you have any questions, we urge you to visit the Campaign Web site, where you will find this update posted.

Thank you!
