NJBIA To Honor Seven Companies, Two Individuals at Awards For Excellence Dinner October 21

The New Jersey Business & Industry Association will recognize seven companies and two individuals with an Award For Excellence at the annual Awards for Excellence Dinner on Tuesday, October 21, at the Westin Princeton in Forrestal Village. Two other companies will be recognized as Honor Roll recipients.

The Awards For Excellence program recognizes employers for creating jobs, protecting the environment, outstanding human resource management and exceptional public service.

"This is a celebration of all that is good about New Jersey business," NJBIA President Philip Kirschner said. "Our members create jobs and strengthen our economy. They provide health insurance and other benefits for their employees. They find innovative ways to protect our environment. They devote their time and effort to make their communities better."

The Enterprise Award winners, recognized for job creation, are:

  1. icarz, inc. of Newton. The small software company's signature product, PartsWatch, will be used in 600 Pep Boys stores nationwide. The company has grown to 65 New Jersey employees in just three years.
  2. John Wiley & Sons of Hoboken. The global publisher providing content and services to professionals, educators, students, scientists and consumers moved its headquarters from New York City to Hoboken in 2002 and tripled its New Jersey employment.
The Environmental Quality winners, recognized for their environmental protection efforts, are:
  1. Merck & Co., Inc. of Rahway. The company used a new technology to clean 200,000 tons of contaminated soil at its 100-year-old Rahway/Linden facility, avoiding the need to truck the soil to a landfill.
  2. Seaboard Point in North Wildwood. A team of developers and environmental engineers obtained the permits necessary to build a high-end residential development on top of an unclosed landfill.
  3. Valero Refining Corporation-New Jersey of Paulsboro. This oil refinery installed a state-of-the-art Belco scrubber-the only one of its kind in the nation and only the second in the world-to reduce the amount of total dissolved solids discharged into the Delaware River ecosystem while cleaning its air emissions.
The Outstanding Employer winners, recognized for superior human resources management, are:
  1. Cendant Corporation of Parsippany. This financial and real-estate services company helps employees balance the demands of work and their personal lives by providing a wide array of personal services and high quality benefits.
  2. Meridian Health of Neptune. This healthcare company instituted the Total Rewards Partnership Program providing competitive salaries and a high level of benefits and services to become the employer of choice in the Monmouth-Ocean area.
The Public Service Award winners, recognized for community service, are:
  1. Anthony Gentile, a customer service professional with PSE&G in Cranford. Gentile has organized blood drives that have some of the best participation rates of corporate blood drives throughout New Jersey.
  2. V. Peter Traphagen, Sr. of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJSCPA), and founding partner of Traphagen and Traphagen CPAs in Roseland. As chairman of the NJSCPA's Personal Financial Services Committee, Traphagen started the Help Center to provide free financial planning assistance to the families of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

    Additionally, two other companies will receive Honor Roll awards for their achievements. They are Wegmans Food Markets of Princeton in the Outstanding Employer Category and New Jersey Institute of Technology of Newark in the Enterprise category.

    An independent panel of judges reviewed the nominations. The judging was conducted by thirteen members of the Princeton and Newark Chapters of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) along with three NJBIA policy committee chairs: JoAnn Trezza, Human Resources Committee; Edward Hogan, Environmental Quality Committee; and Tim Carden, Economic Development Council. WithumSmith+Brown, the New Jersey-based accounting and consulting firm, verified the information supplied by the finalists.The program begins at 6:00 p.m. and includes a reception, dinner, and awards presentation.
