The New Jersey Business & Industry Association will present the Enterprise Award to John Wiley & Sons, Inc. of Hoboken, a global publisher that moved its headquarters from New York to New Jersey, at the 2003 Awards for Excellence Dinner to be held at the Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village on October 21.

The Enterprise Award is presented annually to companies that have made a significant contribution to New Jersey's economic growth. In John Wiley's case, the company has tripled the number of New Jersey jobs it provides. Wiley is a global publisher providing content and services to professionals, educators, students, scientists and consumers.

"John Wiley & Sons is a first-rate company that is making a major commitment to the City of Hoboken and the state of New Jersey," NJBIA President Philip Kirschner said. "Not only is John Wiley & sons bringing 950 new jobs to the state, but they are also helping to anchor Hoboken's waterfront development efforts. The company has quickly established itself as one of Hoboken's premier employers."

John Wiley & Sons opened its new global headquarters in Hoboken in July 2002, bringing 950 new jobs to New Jersey and giving a big financial boost to the city at large. The move increased the company's New Jersey workforce from about 300 (employed at its U.S. distribution center in Somerset) to 1,250. Most of these jobs are quality, high-paying jobs averaging nearly $64,000 per year.

The company is also doing its part to support the city's revitalization efforts. Wiley's new headquarters anchors the brand new Waterfront Corporate Center (itself a winner of NJBIA's 2003 New Good Neighbor Award), which is the first step in developing Hoboken's waterfront area.

Since 1984, NJBIA annually has honored a select group of its members with an Award for Excellence. The Awards for Excellence winners demonstrate outstanding achievements in one of three award categories: Environmental Quality, Outstanding Employer, and Enterprise. A Public Service award is also presented to one or more individual business professionals. All NJBIA member companies are eligible to be nominated.

An independent panel of judges comprised of members of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) selected the winners along with three NJBIA policy committee chairs: JoAnn Trezza, Human Resources Committee; Edward Hogan, Environmental Quality Committee; and Tim Carden, Economic Development Council.

WithumSmith+Brown, the New Jersey-based accounting and consulting firm, verified the information supplied by the winning applicants.

With more than 20,000 member companies, NJBIA is one of the nation's largest state-level employer associations.
