“Our Awards for Excellence winners have had a notably positive impact on the lives of their employees, their communities, the environment, and New Jersey,” said NJBIA President Philip Kirschner, who presented the awards October 17 at a dinner at the Hilton East Brunswick.

“McCarter & English is engaged in a whole host of activities that reflect its involvement with those who need support.”

McCarter & English offers extensive pro bono services to the underprivileged and non-profit organizations.  The firm is the largest and oldest legal services provider in New Jersey. Underscoring this commitment, each attorney will have contributed 60 hours to pro bono work by the end of 2006.  McCarter & English employs an attorney to serve full-time as its pro bono director.

McCarter & English is also involved in non-legal initiatives and supports organizations such as The United Way, Habitat for Humanity, and the American Red Cross. It has also contributed to the preparation of The Handbook for Evacuees of Hurricane Katrina Moving to New Jersey.

McCarter & English provides legal services to numerous charitable, educational and religious organizations at a reduced rate. In addition, the firm’s attorneys have represented prisoners, at the request of the United States District Court, a death row inmate, as part of the ABA death penalty project, and multiple families in conjunction with the World Trade Center tragedy. The company also has made many financial donations given to hurricane victims, and the firm’s employees were supported and subsidized in their volunteer efforts in the Gulf area.

Several of McCarter & English partners are involved in important New Jersey foundations and organizations. For example, Susan Feeney is the President of the Legal Services Foundation of Essex County and Scott Kobler is the Chairman of the Board of New Jersey Network and Vice Chairman of the New Jersey Symphony.

Since 1984, NJBIA annually has honored a select group of its members with an Award for Excellence. The winners demonstrate outstanding achievements in one of four award categories: Environmental Quality, Outstanding Employer, Enterprise and Public Service. All 23,000 NJBIA member companies in good standing are eligible to be nominated.

An independent panel of judges volunteered their time to conduct the judging and select the winners.  Mercadien P.C. Certified Public Accountants of Princeton verified the information supplied by the winning applicants.

With more than 23,000 members, NJBIA is the nation’s largest state-level employer association.
