INTTRA of Parsippany Wins NJBIA Outstanding Employer Award for its Team Approach to Success

The New Jersey Business & Industry Association has presented INTTRA of Parsippany with a 2007 Award for Excellence in the Outstanding Employer category for an innovative program that helps employees work in highly-effective teams.

INTTRA was one of ten companies receiving awards at NJBIA’s 2007 Awards for Excellence Dinner held at the Pines Manor in Edison on October 16.

“It always gives us great pleasure to recognize the outstanding achievements of our member companies.  Each of our winners has a wonderful story that deserves to be told,” said NJBIA President Philip Kirschner.

At INTTRA, employee training is so important the company has dedicated an entire department to it.

As a leading provider of e-commerce for ocean carriers, shippers and exporters, INTTRA wanted to make sure employees had the right behaviors and management skills to function in highly effective teams. As a result, in January 2007, the company created the Organizational and People Development department and separated it from the traditional human resource responsibilities.

With company sales expanding at over 100 percent a year and new offices opening around the world, its commitment to training is critical.  Much of INTTRA’s training programs focus on behaviors, working together as a team, and how to become a better value creator and achieve the company’s strategy.

The High Performance Team Alignments, for instance, aim to make sure all employees are organized, trained and aligned around a set of strategic behaviors that will support future business growth. INTTRA University, another development program of the department, identifies and develops skills employees need to succeed as individuals, as well as fostering company values required to be a market leader.

In addition to running these programs, INTTRA’s management team also sees that communicating the program is essential to employee buy-in. Therefore, all development programs are supported with a company-wide “I-can” message, reflecting the can-do culture required to keep delivering the value expected by their customers and shareholders.

The results of these programs are positive.  Since March 2006, senior managers have reported increases in the clarity of team goals, in the effectiveness of teams in accomplishing goals, and in the working atmosphere within teams. The financial return can also be seen in the company’s low 5.73 percent voluntary employee turnover rate.

Since 1984, NJBIA annually has honored a select group of its members with its Awards for Excellence.  The Awards for Excellence winners demonstrate outstanding achievements in one of four categories:  Job Creation, Outstanding Employer, Environmental Quality and Public Service.  All 23,000 member companies in good standing are eligible to be nominated.

An independent panel of judges, who volunteer their time to conduct the judging, reviewed the nominations.  This year’s judging panel included individuals from the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and the NJBIA policy committees.

Mercadien P.C. Certified Public Accountants of Princeton verified the information supplied by the winning applicants.

With more than 23,000 members, NJBIA is the nation’s largest State-level employer association.
