KPMG LLP was one of ten companies receiving awards at NJBIA’s 2007 Awards for Excellence Dinner held at the Pines Manor in Edison on October 16.
“It always gives us great pleasure to recognize the outstanding achievements of our member companies. Each of our winners has a wonderful story that deserves to be told,” said NJBIA President Philip Kirschner.
When it comes to being an employer of choice, the accounting firm KPMG has devised a good formula: creating opportunities for employees to advance their careers, striking a balance between home and work, and encouraging community service.
No one likes to feel like they are stuck in their job. So KPMG offers employees its “Tax Optionee” program. It enables audit and advisory staff members to learn more about the tax practice by trying it for four to eight months, then discussing with their performance managers where they’d like their careers to go. More than one-third of participants typically opt to remain in tax practice.
KPMG also offers Employee Career Architecture, a Web site that houses all the career development resources the firm has to offer. Employees can explore KPMG career paths, chat online with professionals who are on those paths, and research the skills and experiences needed to build their careers.
Employees at KPMG can also take advantage of a wide variety of work options, including flex-time, telecommuting, compressed workweeks, part-time scheduling, and job sharing. The company also has a shared-leave program that lets employees donate paid time off to colleagues who need the extra time to deal with family emergencies. In 2006, partners and employees donated over 10,300 hours to colleagues.
Under the company’s time-off policy, every KPMG employee receives 12 hours of paid time off annually to volunteer for charitable or community projects of their choice.
The company’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. KPMG was listed on Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” this year, and has been one of Working Mother magazine’s “Best 100 Companies for Working Mothers” for 10 years in a row.
Since 1984, NJBIA annually has honored a select group of its members with its Awards for Excellence. The Awards for Excellence winners demonstrate outstanding achievements in one of four categories: Job Creation, Outstanding Employer, Environmental Quality and Public Service. All 23,000 member companies in good standing are eligible to be nominated.
An independent panel of judges, who volunteer their time to conduct the judging, reviewed the nominations. This year’s judging panel included individuals from the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) and the NJBIA policy committees.
Mercadien P.C. Certified Public Accountants of Princeton verified the information supplied by the winning applicants.
With more than 23,000 members, NJBIA is the nation’s largest State-level employer association.
