May 15-19 is National Bike to Work Week, and a growing number of New Jersey commuters are discovering the benefits of walking or biking. The League of American Bicyclists mined U.S. Census statistics to produce its “Where We Ride” report analyzing commuting trends in American cities and found, for example, that 58 percent of Jersey City commuters and nearly 52 percent of Union City commuters either walk, bike or take mass transit to work. New Jersey also scores highly for its cycling programs and policies aimed at improving safety and accessibility for bicyclists, ranking No. 11 in the nation on the league’s list of Bike Friendly States.
