Hope you are enjoying the last few dog days of summer. Late yesterday afternoon, Speaker Prieto confirmed what had been rumored the past few weeks; Assemblyman Tim Eustace, (D-38) would be taking over as Chair of the Assembly Environment Committee.
Earlier this summer, the previous Chair Grace Spencer resigned her Assembly seat when she was confirmed as a judge. Vice Chair McKeon had taken over responsibilities until a new chair was named. Several of the members of the committee were already chairs of other committees and did not show interest in changing chairmanships.
Assemblyman Eustace, while not a member of the committee, has been active in energy and environmental policy. Eustace is sponsor of numerous pieces of environmental legislation concerning the transport of parts and products of certain animals at Port Authority NYNJ airports and port facilities, establishing a home elevation fund to help residents rebuilding along the New Jersey shore and urging Congress to enact the Water Quality Investment Act to protect our national water resources. Eustace also was the sponsor of the bill that would permit electric cars to be sold directly to consumers.
Eustace has also raised awareness of the decline of the monarch butterfly species by introducing legislation that would establish the Milkweed for Monarchs program within the Department of Environmental Protection. The bill would allow for the adoption of state-owned stormwater management basins for planting milkweed and creating monarch habitats.
Additionally, Eustace serves on the Assembly Health and Senior Services Committee as Vice Chair and on the Commerce and Economic Development Committee. He has been a member of the General Assembly for four years.
