For employers who say they’re having trouble finding the right people to fill jobs, Gallup says a company’s hiring process may be a big reason why.

In a Business Journal article last week, Gallup wondered, “Why is there a so-called ‘talent shortage’ when millions of Americans are looking for good jobs?”

The article states that too many companies equate talent with experience and as a result, are overlooking recruits who could excel simply because they do not have the preferred background. In one study, companies failed to choose the job candidate with the right talent 82 percent of the time, Gallup said.

“Understanding this flaw in recruiting is the key to exploiting it,” the article states. “Focusing on talent when hiring allows companies to loosen up unnecessary job requirements, thus drawing a greater applicant pool.”
