U.S. manufacturing output and competitiveness ranks among the highest in the world, even as the number of U.S. manufacturing jobs has declined during the past 30 years.

A recent Pew Research study found most Americans are unaware that, despite the contraction in jobs, U.S. manufacturing output has increased 80 percent since 1987. The face of manufacturing has changed as well. More than three-quarters of the nation’s manufacturers employ fewer than 20 people and 80 percent of manufacturers report a shortage of job applicants for highly skilled production jobs.
