American’s confidence in small businesses hit an all-time high this year, earning a 70 percent rating in Gallup’s research on institutions. It is the highest confidence rating for small business in the pollster’s trend and gives small business the second-highest rating of any of the 16 institutions tested in 2017. (The military was the highest.)

The reasons cited include the idea that small businesses are part of the American dream and the backbone of the economy (29 percent), and are more personally invested, determined and accountable to customers (28 percent).

“Thus, as American business moves toward bigness, fueled by a variety of economic and practical forces, the consumer, at least in theory, has a strong predilection to favor smallness,” Gallup says. “This creates what would appear to be an opportunity for small business…”
