Modernizing the Way States Collect and Store Data
According to Spence Purnell, Research and Policy Analyst at Reason Foundation, “In 2018 most of us have heard, at least in some way, about ‘big data’ and its purported benefits. But there are a number of misplaced concerns and doubts about technology policy among state legislators holding back statewide enterprise software technology upgrades that would vastly improve the organization, efficiency, and performance of state government. The first obstacle is a misunderstanding between open data and shared data, the background technologies needed to develop both, and the potential benefits of both.

How Bank of America Is Phasing More Fintech and AI into Its Branches
There are three ways that Robert H. Doherty, Bank of America’s New Jersey market president, gauges the size of his institution in the Garden State: First off, the bank does business with more than half of all people living in the state … it’s connected with between a third to a half of all commercial entities based here … and it ranks among the state’s Top 10 employers. None of that has changed all too recently. What’s new is that there’s a once-significant measure that Doherty chooses to omit today: the amount of retail spaces it has in the state.

Novo Nordisk Funds Obesity Fellows Program to Address Gaps in Physician Education
Obesity rates have soared in the United States and around the world, yet physician education hasn’t kept pace: Only five fellowship programs train young doctors in obesity medicine, just one-tenth of the 50 programs that are needed. To address that gap, Novo Nordisk announced last week it will work with the Obesity Society and the Obesity Medicine Association to create the Obesity Medicine Fellowship Development Program, which will eventually bring the number of fellowship programs to 20 across the country.

Lessons Learned: This Is How You Go from Academia to Industry for a Postdoc
According to Megha Satyanarayana of STAT News, “If you’re thinking of jumping from academics to industry/business or vice versa, join us each week for useful tips. Who we talked to: Max Salick, 32, postdoctoral scholar, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research. Why you should listen: Industry postdocs are an increasingly popular choice for young scientists finishing their graduate degrees or a first academic postdoc. Max wasn’t sure that industry was right for him at first, but four years later, he’s about to finish this phase of his career.

What’s the Tech Industry’s Responsibility in an Era of Robotics-Driven Unemployment?
According to James Barrood, CEO and president of the New Jersey Tech Council, “The mainstream media has grown increasingly concerned about robotics and its potential impact on employment. As is often the case, there’s some hype at work: maybe a bit too much willingness to believe marketing materials, perhaps a bit of conflation with other technological advances. But the broader point is largely legitimate. In the coming years, at a pace that we can’t accurately predict, many millions of the remaining jobs that don’t require advanced education will disappear.”
