Did you know New Jersey is the 9th healthiest state in the nation? According to America’s Health Rankings Annual Report, prepared by the United Health Foundation, New Jersey improved from #11 last year.

As the longest-running annual assessment of the nation’s health on a state-by-state basis, the report showcases positive trends in the health of the nation as well as concerning upticks in several key indicators.

Also of note, New Jersey has the third lowest adult smoking rate in the nation – 13.5 percent, compared to the 17.5 percent national average.

Among the report’s findings:

  • The prevalence of obesity in the U.S. population continues to be high. Obesity impacts nearly 3 out of 10 U.S. adults across the country; in New Jersey, obesity impacts 25.6 percent of adults – compared to 29.8 percent nationally.
  • The rate of drug overdose deaths nationwide has increased 4 percent in the past year, for a nationwide average of 14 deaths per 100,000 population. New Jersey’s rate mirrors the national average.
